honoring grandpa – heirlooms from the 50s

Photos from the 50s that belonged to my grandfather.

my grandfather was really fond of photography. he lived from march 1932 to this past june; 83 strong years. to this day my family and I are still discovering pictures he had stashed in different briefcases, bags, and folders from many years ago; some only his eyes had seen. we’ve also found several cameras that not even my grandma knew he owned. she said he would buy a camera and hide it from her because she would get mad at him for purchasing yet another camera. oh, grandpa. i get you. i, too, am obsessed with different cameras.

grandma’s recent discovery were a few photos which she believes are from the 50s, meaning my grandfather was in his early twenties when these were taken. it makes me happy to be able to see what he saw when he was about the same age as I am today.

these two photos above are from a bridge that was placed temporarily after a massive flood destroyed the actual bridge that united the mexican-american border on our town.

you don’t know how grateful i am that he took these photos. they are amazing. they give me an opportunity to picture what it would’ve been like to live in those times. it’s almost like experiencing it. thank you so much grandpa.

farmer’s market: september

the other day I stumbled upon this picture of the first time my boyfriend and I went to our local farmer’s market. it made me miss it and want to go. all of the food and the fun him and I had –that was a good day!

then last saturday I woke up at 9 am randomly, like something told me to wake up. I look at my phone and it has a notification saying “farmer’s market today!” so I had to tell david and an hour later we were on our way. oh how he spoils me even when he’s half asleep! <3

boyfriend had many taquitos, I had a corn and a lemon paleta. happy, happy campers! :)

so we passed by a floor full of chalk drawings and i mean…how could we say no!?

my work of art: celebrating my pug’s birthday!
david’s artwork: a very happy poop :D!

I took my minolta with me and shot some photos of this day + the buildings around us. I would gladly share them..but I’m a very lazy human that hasn’t developed that film yet, sorry, hah! david took his lego star wars minifigures and shot several pictures too! (you can follow him on instagram here!)

ok, I don’t know how this is gonna sound, but you know don’t know how happy it made me to see that someone made and sold natural deodorants in my hometown (and in such a cute packaging!). in case you’re interested: it works, it smells good, you can make your own by following recipes online,  and best of all: it’s not bad for your body. yay!

oh, and that orange mason jar is a carrot cake for my grandma! it smelled soo good!

the sky looked so pretty that day. we just had to go on the rooftop again.

I love local events. I’m glad David likes them too.

well, until next time friends :) thanks for stopping by!

farmer’s market: june

Because today was our town’s farmer’s market and we didn’t get to go and we are sad, I wanted to share a couple of cute pictures my boyfriend took of Max last month that we went. For memories and such.

Just look at him! Happy boy. Oh and look at the size of that mango in my hand! Huge!

All smiles + my grandma in the background, hey!

We even made it to one of the local magazines:

Picture from the article. So famous, that Pug!

Regardless of his popularity and our happiness produced by the food present, Max had a little..accident, if you will.. I completely forgot to bring doggy bags until he reminded me by leaving a present for the grass. Oh, Max… All of us, even grandma, had to pretend we didn’t know that had happened. We just left laughing. What else could we do, haha! Sorry!

Oh, also this really creepy old truck driver guy came up to my sister and me and started flirting with us and telling me that I should dump my boyfriend, and that he was in a hunt for a wife that looked like me. We ran.. haha

Anyway, leaving the poop and creepy guy talk behind, I hope your day is good and that you are happy :)

Thanks for stopping by, and don’t talk to strangers, kids! See you soon :)

artisan bazaar

in our little town, there have been many events this year so far. friday was the first

artisan bazaar

and of course, david, my handy camera, and i were present! we got there a little late, so we couldn’t see many of the artists, just a few. we promised that next time we’ll get there earlier. (and take more cash to buy everything!)

our local artists are amazingly good! i didn’t know we had so many hidden gems out here. it was really good to see that. it made me happy that our town gave them the chance to show their art to the community.

again, we only caught a few artists, (and to others i was too shy to ask for a picture), but i couldn’t resist to share with all of you what we saw! here are some pictures with the people that created those awesome art pieces:

to get more information about the artist, you can click on his or her name to go to their page :)

Rebeca Guevara

this woman had the most original idea: she made embellished post cards!

here’s what i mean:

IMG_8716 IMG_8717

you can write behind them and send them without any  problems :) the art of handwriting letters is dead, but vintage things are always cool. just imagine getting this  beauty on the mail? <3

i wanted to buy everything! not to send ’em, but to have them in frames. these are too pretty to not see daily.

if you’re mexican, don’t her paintings just bring back childhood memories of playing loteria at your grandma’s house? cuz that was exactly our reaction! loteria is a mexican game similar to bingo. just that instead of numbers and letter being called out, cards with images like the ones she has painted appear. the carta, playing card, she had there was my favorite!

José Luis aun

IMG_8746

this guy’s art was amazing! it was like mythical creatures and forests. he had a little bio on the table that said that his work has been features in many countries.

IMG_8741IMG_8739

we know that there are still more local artists out there who are really good at what they do. if you’re one, i really encourage you to showcase your work like this. even if you don’t sell it, you give it exposure :) the art scene in our town is growing, and for you to be a part of it would be awesome!

extra pictures from the bazaar and downtown:

like if we were in ‘Big’

* big as in tom hanks BIG, the 1988 film, carnival scene where he makes the wish to zoltar. (haven’t seen the movie? what?! you must!)

we’ve been saying for years that the next time the carnival comes, we’ll go and get a corndog. that has not happened until it finally did last week :D! no corndog though. i didn’t crave it at the moment. i regret it now :(

IMG_8489IMG_8479 IMG_8495  IMG_8500

we only got on two rides cuz the lines were too long and david and i don’t have patience for that. also we were super hungry and just wanted to eat and not throw up in a ride, haha.

IMG_8581

foot-long hot dogs ended up being our dinner:IMG_2854

IMG_2838
i can’t believe we ate from here, haha. our moms would disapprove so bad!

   IMG_2826

IMG_8517  IMG_8523

we passed by a stand that had birds and bunnies (as prices, we supposed) (i know, it’s horrible, don’t even get me started cuz i’ll cry of anger). we loved that little white bunny, though. he looked like he had no worries in the world. happy fella! sorry we couldn’t rescue you, boy :( …

besides bunnies,

little things i saw i wanted to take home: IMG_8569 IMG_8575 IMG_8497IMG_8492

I LOVE merry-go-rounds! not riding them, but looking at them. their details, and colors, and lights. everything!

IMG_8540  IMG_8549

IMG_8552
if you’re a Bob’s Burger’s fan: i took this picture with Tina in mind.

IMG_8553

IMG_8594
bye, carnival! see you whenever i crave a corndog again!
IMG_8604
candid picture of david. we were both exhausted!!

we decided to go home to sleep. but on our way, we started talking, woke up a little more, then passed by walmart and i got the urge to go purchase things i swore i needed haha. it ended up being a star wars lego run as both of us got one.

mine: a mini millennium falcon!
