mexico city, through the eyes of my diana mini

last month david, my family and I traveled to mexico city. i only took two 35mm film cameras: my diana mini and my canon sureshot telemax. i always go to mexico city because i love it so much, so i feel i am always taking the same photos over and over with my phone or camera. i wanted to change it up a little bit. i was really excited to develop my film because i swore i got good shots. the scenery looked promising at the time I took the photos. however, when i got my prints back, i wasn’t too amazed by them. i hadn’t used my diana mini in a long time that i had forgotten things about it. also, because i was being cheap and wanted to save $2 on film, i decided to purchase 200ISO film. bad idea. diana mini works best with 400 and 800. i guess this served as a lesson!

i’m not in love with the photos, but after seeing them again, I’m starting to like them. they bring back good memories – and that’s really important to me. hence why i’m sharing them and why i have this blog: for memories.

this was david’s first time traveling with my family. i am so glad we got the chance to do it because he got to know my uncle’s family and how my family is outside the typical “hello/how are you/goodbye” scenarios when he comes to my home. we went to the city specifically to take my devout grandmother to the basilica because she wanted to pray and thank the virgin for everything she did and is doing for us. it was her first time on plane, so yay abuela!

p.s: this is my first time uploading photos to my blog from flickr. not sure how i feel about it.. probably won’t be doing that again.

when you find a lonely film around your room, you develop it.

…and find photos from december 2015 from a trip you took with friends, because your boyfriend and his band had a gig in austin.

Austin and San Marcos Austin and San Marcos 1 Austin and San Marcos 2 Austin and San Marcos 4 Austin and San Marcos 3 Austin and San Marcos 5 Austin and San Marcos 6 Austin and San Marcos 7 Austin and San Marcos 8

i took these with my canon sure shot telemax. i think it was my first time taking her out for a ride, so sorry if these shots aren’t perfect. i still liked them though :) i love my friends.

a silly wish list.

i honestly just have a couple of bucks under my name, if anything, at the moment. hence this post. a post about cool things i’ve seen around the web that i honestly don’t have a need for (or money for), but would be cool to own. why does it always happen that anytime i find something neat i am out of money? ugh. a girl can dream, right?

anyway, here’s my current silly wish list accompanied by cute illustrations/photos:

jeffree star’s velour liquid lipsticks + others

but they’re always sold out..

anything by lomography

i love the surprise of not knowing how your photo will turn out until you develop it. i also really love the effects plastic cameras give your images; light leaks and vignetters take my heart. even if some people don’t like them.

headphones

because my guinea pig ate my last ones and i really miss them… damn you little robyn! (who i can’t stay mad at)

glasses

ok, these i do need. my current ones are broken and scratched. but i always hear stories of people spending upwards of $700 on glasses + exams and it scares me..

an automatic ball launcher for my dog

kind of silly (but then again, this is a silly wish list) because my golden retriever probably gets bored in our backyard and deserves it for being awesome..

paper shoot

a camera made out of paper. simple!

buuut, i know myself. once i get paid, that money will be spent on my guinea pigs, ha! oh well, i’d rather see them happy and well fed than me with yet another camera that i just want for my collection or more lipsticks that i’ll probably use just once.

what things are on your silly wish list at the moment? things that you want just for the fun of? let me know!

have a very nice day :)

p.s: creators (those that i found) of the illustrations are tagged on them.

mom took my canon to mexico city.

and these are the pictures she came back with:
Mom took my Canon 12Mom took my Canon 3 Mom took my Canon 2Mom took my Canon 7 Mom took my Canon 5 Mom took my Canon 1 Mom took my Canon 11 Mom took my Canon 6 Mom took my Canon Mom took my Canon 8 Mom took my Canon 9 Mom took my Canon 10 Mom took my Canon 4

i have to give her props, taking pictures with a film camera is a little challenging at times. some are blurry, but i like em though. reminds me of how those old mexican movies looked. and it reminds me of my abuelo cuz he would always be watching them every time i would visit him. good memories. and good pictures, mother.

p.s: i got this little canon point-and-shoot, 35mm camera because i wanted something small to capture moments with. this is the first film i develop from it. i love it already.

fotos análogas de una feria mexicana

Analog photos of a carnival in Mexico.

Analog photos of a carnival in Mexico.

I finally got some film developed. One of the rolls included these pictures I took in september when my family, David, and I drove to our neighboring town in Mexico and to their feria. A mexican feria is almost the same concept as an american carnival– lots of lights and rides, games to be played and prices waiting to be won, filled with delicious food, both local and from out of town. You can also listen to bands play or admire cattle. They, however, don’t compare when talking about the experience. In my opinion, ferias are more fun and since the moment you walk in, you get an adrenaline thrill.

I know carnivals vary from town to town but something I haven’t seen in our local carnival, besides food and candies being entirely mexican, is that ferias have vendors selling multiple things like bedlinen, dinnerware, decorations for the home, jewelry, bags, and other handmade accessories. Did I also mention there are indigenous men throwing themselves from an almost 100 ft pole and flying?

Sorry about the bad quality, but this is what the bedlinen stands look like. The seller is up there with a microphone talking like an auctioneer would. He gathers different products and sells them to you. You cannot go to the feria without hearing these men making deals; it’s almost like a tradition, really.

Not my photo. The Voladores de Papantla doing their traditional dance/ritual. There are 5 men; 4 jump and one stays on top playing the flute. It’s mesmerizing. Total respect for these men who do it continuously.

a few analog photos from our time there:

grandma went too and she was telling us stories about how she, her friends, and sisters would go to the feria before getting married. she said they would all make deals where they all had get on every ride and no one could say no. she also remembers going to the feria with my grandpa. the first time they went together on a date was my grandfathers first time ever on a ride. oh how I wish I could see how this town looked like in the 60s in person..

we must get a corn every chance we get. family rule!

Photos taken with a Minolta XG7 in Kodak Portra 400 film. I’m still practicing film photography. I thought these weren’t going to come out good since I was having trouble with this camera. But no, once I got my hands on these pictures I was happy. I am in love with my minolta and this film. Always room for improvement though. I just wanted to document this day.

I hope you have a nice tuesday.

Thanks so much for stopping by and reading this post!

the other day boyfriend picked me up from school and we went to a park that is between both our homes. he took some lego to take pictures; you know, his hobby. and they turned out really good. I am so proud of him and am happy that he has a loyal community that supports him. he deserves it.

we got to the park and found a small opening between trees and bushes and ventured in. it was a whole other section of the park. a quiet one far from people. one where we could have a picnic an afternoon, or bring a telescope and a blanket and look at the stars and the moon at night and not be bothered.

we might actually do that someday :) for now, he took pictures and I laid down on the fresh-cut grass and danced and explored. it was like we were not even in our town anymore.

that was a good day.

an afternoon with alexander, angelica, david, & my pentax

almost a month ago I received on the mail a pentax film camera from the 70s that david got for me.  it is so so pretty. the moment I pulled it out the box I fell in love with it. i couldn’t stop thanking david enough.

here are some photos I took with it that I wanted to share with you guys:)

aren’t my models the best? I love it when I capture pictures of David laughing.

I still need to play with my camera a little bit more, and maybe even try a different photo lab, but overall I was happy with the results. bothering grumpy alexander and telling him not to eat my shoe is always fun.

happy wednesday!

september photo challenge: week two

i told myself i was gonna post these photos every five days to have enough for the whole 30 days in september. but i’ve been bad about it :( school has been getting tougher and tougher. this week, for example, i have tests and reports almost daily. it’s horrible, but i’m surviving! i miss writing for my little blog though. so today i took a little time to bring you something i was supposed to post saturday. (oops). not that i am forced or anything, but i love doing so, and writing this + reading your blog posts makes me happy and gives a break from writing reports and memorizing things i’ll probably forget next week, sadly. so, without further ado, the second week of my september photo challenge! :)

but I am so glad I did.

 diana mini 2 25

I just finished my first week as a senior in college.

I feel really good about this semester. I’m already really busy and I love it!

I am taking tough but informative classes; I am a volunteer; I have a job; I’m teaching myself how to take analog pictures; and I have an organized planner. I think I’m doing well.. :)

how was your week? and if you’re in school, how’s it going? :)!

rockstars are hard to photograph

Just like in my last post, these pictures were taken by the diana mini. I’m new to this whole analog thing, but I am learning :)

 btw,

feliz cinco de mayo

(..para todos los que celebran pensando que es el día de independencia de méxico!)

life lately: april

I always loved the way pictures taken by an old camera would turn out. so i thought, why not!, and got myself a little toy one for my birthday. its name: diana mini. just perfect!

it uses film, and after getting my pictures developed, i wanted to share some with you because i was so excited! nothing like that waiting period to see how your pictures turned out.

so, here are some pictures taken by the diana mini and by two disposable cameras :)

you can click any image to enlarge.

sorry not sorry for the pet overload! I just can’t help it.. :)

have a happy sunday! :D
