valentine’s day 2019: burgers, photo booth strips, & ear tattoos.

people say valentine’s day can be so shitty, and i get why they say that. i got nothing against it, but it’s not really my thing. it was the bomb in grade school, not gonna lie! picking the best card for your best friend and carefully selecting who got which one was the most thoughtful decision at that age.

my boyfriend and i don’t really do much on valentine’s day. we don’t even exchange gifts. but this year we, for some reason, both felt this pressure to do something. like, going out somewhere was something we absolutely had to do. we felt “like if we don’t do something, we suck,” as he put it. and we didn’t know why we felt this way if we had never fallen victim to this (either very loved or very hated) holiday before. has anyone felt that way too?

we spent an hour on the phone deciding what to do; talking about random things and sometimes being in complete silence with each other’s company. afterwards, those pressuring feelings went away and we decided to see each other and eat. he brought over to my house the most delicious thing ever known to man: a bacon cheeseburger. five guys burgers and fries to be precise.

we were just there in my little dining room with my nosy dogs around us, surrounded by the flowers and chocolates my mom and sisters exchanged, and it was perfect. our date and the delicious burgers – all perfect. i think this has become my favorite v day. how does doing something so ordinary end up meaning and changing so much just because of the date? weird, but i loved it.

he also handed me these photo booth strips. we took them a few weeks ago on a trip to new york inside the best pancake place that happens to have a vintage photo booth in the basement. and yep, that first photo caught us off guard. it’s still a cute strip and i can’t wait to frame them both.

i think after this i’m kind of a fan of this day. and i’m proud of us for not spending money on gifts. we said we weren’t because we were, truthfully, lazy (haha) and are saving for our future. :) (and to pay off our credit cards.. spend your money wisely, kids!) anyway, i do think the idea of having a whole day dedicated to love is an interesting one. and i don’t mean just relationship love. love for each other, love for friends, love for ourselves, etc. truly dissecting what it means to love. this world needs it, so i hope people look past the gifts and truly think about it and, ultimately, be kind enough to love each other.

i hope you had a good day, too!

much love,

 diana

oh, also: i have the word “LOVE” tattoed on my ear! just in case you wanted to know a random, fun fact about me ;)

I can make that! – Blouse with ruffled sleeves and a gathered back.

One of the things I really love to do is sew. So much so, that I even own a shop where I sew accessories for dogs and cats :) I knew the basics, but I wanted to learn more to the point where I could actually make my own clothes. I just always thought that was so cool. Since last year, I have been taking sewing classes and I feel I’ve reached a comfortable enough stage to grab a pattern from the shelves and give it a go. The class has not only made me appreciate sewing way, way more, but it has also made me a more savvy shopper. You start to pay attention to seams, fabrics, and the construction of the garment. You begin to analyze it: is it well-made or not worth my money? I’ve even gotten to the point where I look at clothes in the store, online, or being worn on Instagram and I think, “I can make that :D!” It’s a good feeling.

Don’t get me wrong, sewing is tough! It takes so much patience and knowledge. But if you’re like me, paying $50 for a basic, thin tee is a no-no. If I can, I’m going to try it to make it. Also, it’s fun, so why not! I want to make this a series here on my blog. A sort of like, I-attempt-to-make-today’s-fast-fashion-trends, and maybe save money and improve my sewing skills. If you’re new at this too, then join me and let’s learn together!

I’ve seen that shirts with ruffled sleeves are very popular at the moment. They’re very cute so I wanted to make one myself. I found the Simplicity 8335 pattern in my local store and got to work! It’s a Learn to Sew edition, which was perfect for me since I still consider myself a beginner. For me some parts were tricky, I’m not gonna lie. I acknowledge the mistakes I made and like I said, I am still learning, so in my mind, it’s ok to mess up as long as I learn from it, which I did.

I’ve linked some similar styles below in case you need inspiration. The orange romper is my favorite! Might just contradict all I’ve been saying and buy it…(kidding, but it is cute)

Anyway, here is the end result: (I didn’t iron it, don’t judge)

I should’ve ironed it! I love how it looks though. Sadly, no one will be able to wear it :( I made a huge rookie mistake when sewing this: I didn’t measure my sister (it was for her) to see if the size I cut out would fit her. I also didn’t make her wear it along the way to see if I needed any alterations. My fault for sewing this at midnight when she was asleep.

I was reading other’s reviews on it and they said theirs fit them small as well, so take it from me and them and size up. It says an XS (which I made) will fit a woman’s 6-8 but that’s so untrue. I also read another blog where a girl combined size S for the body but M for the sleeves – it’s a smart idea you can try as well. Do what I didn’t do and measure!

Also, I felt I rushed my process out of excitement that I did sloppy work. Very sloppy work. As a whole, I’m proud that I accomplished this, but when I come close and focus on the little details on the blouse, it kills me. I should’ve been more careful. At least I learned many things– so that’s the bright side. Take a chance and give a sewing project a try! Even if, like me, you first don’t do so good.

What did you think of my top? Do you like these kinds of posts? Should I make it a series? Let me know in the comments! :)

I really, really love reading blogs, so I decided to make a list of the ones I’m loving at the moment. I believe they deserve (even more) recognition for their writings and pictures. I feel some of these blogs should be part of your repertoire as well, but that is just my opinion :). some of them are big blogs, some of them are little blogs, but who cares! they all have good content and at the moment they are my favorite.

Oh rainy day, Oh happy day

IMAG0128 IMAG0129

well, happy day for some. it was a little overwhelming getting to school today with this rain. I don’t know how my little car got through it all but it did. Good boy.

I wasn’t excited for this friday – or lately any friday, since fridays now I mean I have to spend three hours dissecting a stinky cat for my anatomy class. but waking up to pouring rain and witnessing my sisters attempting to get into my dad’s car without getting wet on their way to school changed my perspective for today. even if mom and I almost got stuck in a river and even if I got late to class, today is a good day. so friends, happy friday!

good, happy things that happened this week:

  • I’m an aunt!
  • I developed three roles of film.
  • I cut David’s hair.
  • My boyfriend, my sister, and I gave Alexander the hedgehog, Max the pug, and Napo and Linda the guinea pigs baths.
  • I saw my friend’s baby bump in her baby shower and ate tacos.
  • I submitted an application to study abroad during the winter and I got accepted!
  • My blog turned one year old and I gave it a new look.
  • I discovered new blogs and that makes me happy.
  • This is my 80th blog post.
